Introduction
The social structure of Xha'Ruun civilization is the result of a conscious rejection of the estate model. Formally, society is casteless: social status is determined not by origin but by contribution, education, and professional recognition. The mechanism is the guild system, which ensures high social mobility.
6.1 Formal Structure
Xha'Ruun society is formally casteless. Social status is determined by:
| Factor | Weight | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Guild | 40% | Membership and rank |
| Merit | 30% | Contribution to society |
| Education | 20% | Level of knowledge |
| Origin | 10% | Family (minimal influence) |
Guild membership and rank are the main status factor (40%). Origin, in contrast, is deliberately minimized (10%) — a lesson of history: the estate-based First Empire fell partly because of the elite-people gap (→ see [Volume II, Ch.04, "The Era of Crisis"]).
6.2 Social Mobility
High mobility: 60% of guild members come from families of a different status.
| Path | Difficulty | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Education → Guild | Low | 10–15 years |
| Merit → Recognition | Medium | 5–20 years |
| Guild change | Medium | 1–3 years |
| Entrepreneurship | Low | Any |
The key mobility channel — education: free and accessible, it allows anyone to enter a guild by ability rather than origin.
6.3 Family and Kinship
Family ties include affection, habit, care, shared expenses and division of work. Public support helps households but does not cook every meal or replace all daily care. Family arrangements vary and cannot be derived from a single guild model.
6.4 Equality of Species
The social structure includes all three sapient species (→ see [Volume II, Ch.14, "The Three Species"]). Xha'ri, Kel'vash, and Moryn are equal before the law; social status within each species is determined by the same factors. Interspecies relations are governed by the Law of Accord.
6.5 Institutional Protection
Equality is protected institutionally:
- The canon — prohibition of discrimination by origin and species;
- Guild courts — protection of members' rights;
- The Keeper of Knowledge — canon conformity control;
- Educational accessibility — removal of mobility barriers.
Chapter Summary
- Society is formally casteless; status — by contribution, not origin.
- Status factors: guild (40%), merit (30%), education (20%), origin (10%).
- High mobility: 60% of guild members from families of another status.
- Education — the main channel of social mobility.
- Equality of the three species is protected by the canon and the Law of Accord.
The 40/30/20/10 weights are an analytical model of status, not a physical measure of respect or a rule for every family. Identical qualifications operate differently where contacts, journeys to work and available time differ.
