Introduction

Education is the foundation of Xha'Ruun civilization, its highest institutional priority. The lesson of the dark ages (→ see [Volume II, Ch.04, "The Era of Crisis"]) — knowledge is fragile, and its transmission requires a system. The modern education system is continuous: from primary school to lifelong guild training.

7.1 The Education System

Level Age Duration Content
Primary 5–10 years 5 years Writing, arithmetic, canon
Secondary 10–15 years 5 years Sciences, languages, guilds
Higher (Guild) 15–20 years 5 years Specialization
Academy 20+ 3–8 years Research work

The system is built on the principle of progressive narrowing: from universal primary education to specialized guild training. Secondary education introduces students to all 12 guilds' activities; the choice of guild occurs at the threshold of the higher level.

7.2 Coverage

Coverage indicators result from two factors: free and accessible education (→ see [Volume III, Ch.03, "Economic System"]) and a cultural norm fixed in the canon.

7.3 Guild Training

Higher education is organized through the guilds (→ see [Volume III, Ch.04, "The 12 Guilds: Structure"]):

Guild training does not end with the attainment of a rank: lifelong professional development is the norm, ensuring knowledge remains current amid technological progress.

7.4 Academies

Academies — the peak of the educational pyramid: research institutions united with universities. The largest — the Academy of Khar-Vexar (+1,200, → see [Volume II, Ch.10, "History of Science"]). Academies train scientific cadres and conduct fundamental research.

7.5 Education and Mobility

Education expands opportunity, but practical access requires transport, food, a place to study and support for those caring for relatives. A right to learn does not give every child the same amount of free time.

Chapter Summary

  1. Education — a continuous system: primary → secondary → guild → academy.
  2. Coverage: literacy 100%, secondary 98%, guild 72%, academies 12%.
  3. Guild training — apprenticeship and lifelong development.
  4. Academies — the peak of the educational and scientific pyramid.
  5. Education — the main channel of social mobility.

Literacy of 100% is a rounded figure for the surveyed population, not a claim about every age and condition. Khar-Vexar’s academic tradition dates to the Renaissance;1200 refers to the later establishment and expansion of the academic institution. Age ranges describe a usual pathway, not a ban on returning to study later.
