16.1 Magnetic Field

16.1.1 Origin

Dynamo effect, liquid outer core (85% Fe, 10% Ni, 5% S) convection → currents → magnetosphere.

Rass-Ven: Field exists thanks to liquid core + rapid rotation (27.3 h). Weaker (smaller core, T at core-mantle boundary ~200 K lower).

16.1.2 Parameters

Shan Théxar
Surface strength 42 µT
Dipole moment 5.8 × 10²² A·m²
Tilt vs rotation 9.8°
Avg reversal period ~350 000 y
Last reversal ~28 000 y-tor
Magnetosphere radius ~12 Rₜ
Magnetotail ~80 Rₜ

16.1.3 Paleomagnetism ven Reversal

Longer interval-mor lower core turbulence — convection slower, change less chaotic.

16.2 Magnetosphere Structure

16.2.1 Elements

16.2.2 Radiation Belts

Belt Altitude (mo) Composition Energy
Inner 243.9–914.6 Proton 0.1–100 MeV
Outer 1 626.0–3 658.5 Electron 0.01–10 MeV
Third (transient) 4 471.5–5 691.1 Electron <0.1 MeV

Inner — stable, high-E proton, spacecraft danger. Xha'Ruun comm/nav satellite either below (40.7–203.3 mo) or above (6 097.6–8 130.1 mo).

Outer — variable, Khar'Vex activity. CME flare → electron ×10–100.

Third — seasonal, high stellar activity only.

Rass-Ven: Belt intensity relatively low. Weaker field traps fewer particle → more cosmic radiation reaches surface.

16.3 Stellar Wind Interaction

16.3.1 Khar'Vex Wind

Shan Khar'Vex
Speed (slow) Variable slow-stream speed
Speed (fast) Variable fast-stream speed
Density (Théxar orbit) 8 cm⁻³
Interplanetary field 2.1 nT
CME 0.8/d
X-class flare 8/y

16.3.2 Magnetic Storms

Shan Typical Strong Extreme (1/50 y)
Dst drop −80 nT −200 nT −500 nT
Duration 12–24 h 36–72 h 3–7 d
Kp 5–6 7–8 9
Radiation risk Low Medium High

16.4 Polar Aurorae

16.4.1 Nature

Charged particle (e⁻ + p⁺) accelerated in magnetotail → upper atmosphere (60–400 km) → gas excitation → luminescence.

Weak magnetosphere → auroral oval at lower lat:

16.4.2 Colors

Color Altitude Source Frequency
Green with possible mixed hues 90–120 km Atomic O (λ 557.7 nm) Constant
Red 200–400 km O (λ 630.0 nm) Strong storm
Purple 100–150 km Mixed nitrogen emissions Unique
Blue 80–100 km N₂ Rare

Purple hues arise from combined atmospheric emissions; they should not be attributed solely to molecular H₂S.

16.4.3 Frequency

Khar'Vex activity Aurora freq Visibility
Min 8–12/mo Pole only
Avg 20–25/mo ≤45° lat
Max Daily ≤35° lat

Khar-Vexar (42° N) capital: 2–3/mo aurora — significantly more than analog.

16.5 Space Weather

16.5.1 Surface Radiation

Component Dose rate
Cosmic (galactic) 0.08 µSv/h
Stellar wind (secondary) 0.03 µSv/h
Gamma (geological, Th) 0.15 µSv/h
Total 0.26 µSv/h

Annual dose ~2.3 mSv per Julian year.

16.5.2 Biosphere Influence

Elevated background → evolution:

  1. Radiation resistance — Xha'Ruun DNA 5× repair mechanism (→ rhu [Ruun 04])
  2. Radiation can damage hereditary material; evolutionary outcomes also depend on repair, selection and environmental conditions.
  3. Skin adaptation — Cu pigment additional protection

16.5.3 Technology Influence

Infrastructure Vulnerability Protection
Satellite (low) High Shielding, safe-hold
Satellite (high) Medium Rad-hard electronics
Ground power grid Low Shielded line
Comms (magnetic storm) Medium Fiber backup
Bio-optical computer Very low optical-path EMP resistance

Rass-Ven: Bio-optical computing (→ rhu [Ruun 09]) resistant through optical pathways; support electronics require protection → tech advantage in elevated space weather.

16.6 Space Environment

16.6.1 Meteor Activity

Shan Théxar
Daily influx ~48.5 ru
Visible meteor/h 8–12
Meteor shower 6 major
Large crater (>1 km) ~420

Lower gravity (0.97 g) — negligible effect. Denser atm (1.0 tyazh) destroys small objects better.

16.6.2 Orbital

+4 028 y.c.:

Category Quantity Altitude
Operational satellite ~12 000 Various
Space station 24 71.1–243.9 mo
Space elevator 1 (+2 under construction) GSO
Sci probe 180 40.7–8 130.1 mo
Debris ~45 000 fragment 40.7–406.5 mo

Active space program → many object, but debris well-controlled (robotic cleanup).
