Volume IX: Dictionary — Chapter 10: Loanwords from Moryn
"Their language is color. We wrote it down in letters and lost nine tenths of the meaning. The remaining tenth was enough to transform our oceanography." — Guild of Scribes, commentary to the "Deep Lexicon," +2,400 Y.E.

10.1 Context
The Moryn inhabit the depths of Ocean Gharra (1,200–3,000 sha; pressure 120–300 tyazh, T 2–8 °X). Their communication is bioluminescent: sequences of color, brightness, and rhythm perceived over the whole body surface (→ see [Volume VII, Ch.07]).
This makes borrowing fundamentally different from the Kel'vash case. The Kel'vash have sound — alien though it is. The Moryn have no sound at all. Every Moryn "word" in Xha'Ruun is a conventional vocalization of a light pattern, adopted by the Guild of Scribes through communication with the Moryn.
There are 26 loans. All are oceanographic, bioluminescent, or social terms for which the Xha'ruun possessed neither the phenomenon nor the concept.
10.2 Rules for Transcribing a Language of Light
| Pattern parameter | Xha'Ruun correspondence |
|---|---|
| Wavelength (color) | vowel: blue → i, green → e, yellow → a, red → u |
| Brightness | vowel length: dim → short, bright → long |
| Rhythm (frequency) | consonant: slow → m, n, l; fast → r, s, sh |
| Duration | number of syllables |
| Simultaneity (2+ colors) | diphthong or cluster |
Hence the sonorant character of all Moryn loans: they abound in m, n, l, r and contain almost no stops. To the ear they are softer than native Xha'Ruun vocabulary — and speakers notice: Moryn loans are called "beautiful," Kel'vash loans "heavy."
Limitation: simultaneous patterns of three or more colors are untranscribable. They are rendered descriptively, in italics, and are not counted as loans.
10.3 Oceanography and Depth
| Sha’Ruun | Source (pattern) | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| moryn | blue-slow-long | the species' autonym, "the deep ones" |
| mirelan | blue-dim-smooth | abyssal zone (>3,000 sha) |
| naleman | green-slow | twilight zone (200–1,200 sha) |
| surelin | blue-fast | cold current |
| muralen | red-slow | benthic silt |
| linaren | blue-to-green transition | thermocline |
| nemarin | green-dim | suspended matter, "marine snow" |
| muraslen | red-fast | hydrothermal vent |
| relanin | green-bright-short | plankton bloom |
| milaren | blue-long | the deep silence, calm on the floor |
10.4 Bioluminescence and Perception
| Sha’Ruun | Source (pattern) | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| lumaren | yellow-slow | glow of a living organism |
| relumen | yellow-fast | warning flash |
| nalumin | green-short | recognition signal |
| surmalen | blue-yellow | predator's lure |
| melurin | red-dim | signal of pain, distress |
| luminarel | all colors in sequence | "full speech," ritual utterance |
| nasuren | green-blue-slow | assent, acceptance |
| remuren | red-fast-short | refusal, prohibition |
| linumen | blue-yellow-flickering | question |
| malurin | yellow-dim-long | reflection, "I am thinking" |
10.5 Moryn Society and Custom
| Sha’Ruun | Source (pattern) | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| naremal | green-slow-long | shoal, community |
| suremalen | blue-green-circular | council, circle of speakers |
| muranel | red-slow-long | mourning silence (light extinguished) |
| lumarelen | yellow-circular | festival of light |
| nalinar | green-blue-short | messenger, herald |
| relmuran | green-red | dispute, clash of views |
10.6 The Untranslatable
| Concept | Why it was not borrowed |
|---|---|
| Simultaneous "speech" with the whole body | no structural analogue — Xha'Ruun is linear in time |
| Distinguishing 40+ shades of blue | Xha'Ruun color vocabulary distinguishes 6 |
| The collective pattern of a shoal | the Xha'ruun have no notion of speech without a speaker |
| "Silence as utterance" | rendered descriptively (muranel is only one special case) |
| Speech by touch-vibration | a mixed channel; the Guild declined to transcribe it |
Among the Moryn, a light pattern can be jointly produced by a shoal. A translation uses -mor and names the collective source. The commission of +2,600 established this practice; it does not require a fifth evidential category.

There are 26 Moryn loans and 31 Kel’vash loans. Light language makes particularly clear how much communication depends on medium and joint action. The Guild of Scribes continues to expand the lexicon and describe methods of translation.
