Volume VI: Technology — Chapter 4: Living Computation

"A processor is not silicon. A processor is a colony. 10¹² molecules, each one a neuron. We do not program — we teach." — Architect of the first bio-colony, +1,800 Y.E.

4.1 Bio-Optical Colonies

Xha'Ruun do not build processors in the terrestrial sense. They grow computing colonies — modified organisms consisting of billions of light-sensitive cells.

Principle: A colony is a film ~2 mm thick, composed of genetically modified cells. Each cell is simultaneously a photosensor, a processor, and a memory cell. The colony "thinks" optically: information is transmitted within it by photons, not electrons.

Parameter Bio-colony Supercomputer (Earth)
Operations/s 10²⁰ 10¹⁶
Energy Powered by light 30 MW
Memory Distributed Centralized
Learning Self-learning Requires code
EMP protection Optical paths are more resilient; interfaces need protection Depends on shielding
Self-repair Yes No
Size 1 m² = 10²⁰ ops/s 100 m²

4.2 Planetary Processor

The largest computing colony — The-Ven ("Earth-Truth") — is located beneath the Thar valley. It is a biofilm ~240 km² in area, grown over 400 years.

Capabilities of The-Ven:

4.3 Crystal Memory (Ven-Khal)

A complement to living computation — long-term memory in silicon-carbide crystals (see Ch.3).

Ven-Khal crystals serve as long-term associative dictionaries. Optical systems read many regions in parallel; transferring a large collection still takes time and is limited by receiver sensitivity and interface bandwidth.
