Volume II: History — Chapter 6: The Era of Unity

The statistical tables below describe the year 4028. Projects with later dates are shown as they were planned then; a target date does not itself establish completion.

"Three thousand years of peace — not a coincidence. It is the result of a choice we made: knowledge over power, harmony over victory." — Keeper of Knowledge, address to the Unity Council, +4,000

Introduction

The Era of Unity is the longest and most stable era in the history of Xha'Ruun civilization. Three-plus millennia of continuous peace, technological progress, and social development without a single war between states. This stability is not chance and not the result of suppression, but the consequence of an institutional choice made at the founding of the Council of Unity.

The era began with political formalization (+850) and passed through four technological phases — industrial, thermonuclear, informational, and the era of abundance. By the statistical snapshot of +4,028 the civilization has achieved a post-scarcity economy, full literacy, and readiness to move beyond its home planet.

6.1 The Founding of the Council of Unity (+850)

+850 y.c. (EV-0011) — 49 representatives gathered in Khar-Vexar to create the supreme authority of the civilization. The first chair was Ven-Thal-Vek, a physicist and diplomat.

6.1.1 Structure of the Council

The Council of Unity (Rass-Vokh-Sha) is built on the principle of dual representation:

Component Composition Function
Guild Chamber 24 members (2 from each of the 12 guilds) Economy, science, technology
Region Chamber 25 members (from the eight domains) Territory, population, culture
Keeper of Knowledge 1 (lifelong, without vote) Control of canon compliance

Total 49 members (24 + 25). The distribution between guilds and regions fixes the balance of the two forces that shaped the civilization: professional associations (guilds) and territorial communities (domains). The Keeper of Knowledge performs a constitutional function — ensuring that Council decisions do not contradict the canon.

6.1.2 First Decisions

  1. Confirmation of the Unified Calendar (introduced in 0);
  2. Official recognition of the guild system (12 guilds);
  3. Creation of a unified writing system based on classical Sha'Ruun;
  4. Establishment of the Keeper Guild as guardian of the canon and archives.

The construction of the orbital elevator — a much later event (+3,000); in the Council's first decades the agenda was set by standardization and institutional building.

6.2 Key Milestones

Year Event Significance
+850 Founding of the Council of Unity Beginning of the era
+900 – +1,400 Institutionalization of guilds Economic base
+1,420 First fusion reactor Expanded energy production
+1,500 Abolition of slavery Social milestone
+1,800 Bio-optical computing Quantum leap
+2,200 Unified mapping service Full map of the planet
+2,800 GNSS (6 → 24 satellites) Navigation network
+3,000 Khar-Tor orbital elevator Space infrastructure
+3,300 Permanent base on Thel He-3 extraction
+4,000 Space infrastructure 48 satellites, 24 stations

6.3 The Guilds

12 Guilds — the foundation of the civilization's economy and governance (recognized by the Council at its founding, institutionally formed in the 9th–15th centuries E.U.):

Guild Field Headquarters Members
Scholars Science Khar-Vexar 2.4 million
Engineers Technology Ven-Khal 3.8 million
Medics Health Khar-Vexar 1.2 million
Agronomists Agriculture Central Plain 5.6 million
Builders Infrastructure Khar-Vexar 2.1 million
Merchants Economy Ven-Khal 4.2 million
Keepers Knowledge, archive Khar-Vexar 0.8 million
Warriors Security Ven-Khal 0.6 million
Artists Culture Shan-En 0.9 million
Miners Extraction Irkhen 1.8 million
Navigators Transport Khar-Vexar 1.1 million
Scribes Administration Khar-Vexar 0.5 million

Total — ~25 million members (including families). A guild is not only a professional union but also a school, a court, and a social network: it gives a name and accepts the name when a person departs (→ see [Volume II, Ch.08, "History of the Guilds"]).

6.4 Technological Progress by Era

The Industrial Era (−1,200 – +1,420)

Steam, coal, steel; railroad construction; electrification. Although its beginning lies in the previous era, it was in the first centuries of the Era of Unity that industrialization covered the whole planet.

The Thermonuclear Era (+1,420 – +2,000)

Controlled fusion, the end of fossil fuels, the first orbital stations. Fusion uses light nuclei including He-3; the thorium cycle belongs to fission (→ see [Volume I, Ch.33, "Fusion and Stellar Energy"]).

The Informational Era (+1,800 – +2,800)

Bio-optical computing, quantum communication; limited artificial intelligence. The first planetary-scale computing networks were created.

The Era of Abundance (+2,800 – present)

Post-scarcity economy, extensive automation, exploration of the moons (the base on Thel). Energy and basic resources are available to everyone; the economic problem shifts from scarcity to distribution.

6.5 Social Achievements

Parameter +850 +4,028
Population (Xha'ri) ~0.4 billion ~2.8 billion
Urbanization 18% 62%
Literacy 40% 100%
Average lifespan ~80 years ~180 years
GDP per capita — 44,000 s.u.
Slavery Existed Abolished (+1,500)

Population growth is restrained by the Growth Commandment (no more than 0.3% per year), adopted in the aftermath of the First Empire crisis. All the civilization's species — Xha'ri (~2.8 billion), Kel'vash (~1.2 billion), and Moryn (~0.8 billion) — total ~4.8 billion (→ see [Volume II, Ch.14, "The Three Species"] and [Volume II, Ch.16, "Demographics"]).
