Volume II: History — Chapter 5: The Renaissance and the Second Unity

"From the ashes of the First Empire, what rose were not empires — what rose were ideas. Freedom, equality, knowledge. And these ideas proved stronger than any army." — From the "Manifesto of the Renaissance," −600

Introduction

The Renaissance is the period in which Xha'Ruun civilization overcame the legacy of the dark ages and laid the foundations of the modern political order. Its central event — the Unity Treaty (−750), which united eight regions of Kharak not by imperial force but by voluntary agreement.

In the era's 1,600 years three processes took place: political unification (from the treaty of eight regions to the Council of Unity), cultural renaissance (the "Age of Enlightenment"), and a technological breakthrough (from the steam engine to orbital flight). The era ends with the founding of the Council of Unity (+850) — the institution that defined the political map of the world for the next three millennia.

5.1 The Unity Treaty (−750)

The key event of the era. Representatives of the 8 regions of Kharak gathered in the ancient capital Khar-Vexar to sign the Unity Treaty (Ven-Rass-Dok).

Terms of the treaty:

  1. Free trade between the 8 regions;
  2. A unified system of measures and weights;
  3. Free movement of citizens;
  4. Renunciation of wars between regions (the Great Truce);
  5. Joint defense against external threats;
  6. A unified calendar (adopted in 0 y.e.);
  7. Establishment of the Interregional Council — the prototype of the Council of Unity.

The Treaty differed from imperial unification in principle: it did not abolish regional power but coordinated it. The regions retained internal self-government, delegating to the union only trade, measures, and defense. This model — a federation of autonomies — became the hallmark of Xha'Ruun civilization for millennia.

5.1.1 The 8 Founding Regions

Region Territory Specialization
Thar 4.2 million km² Administrative
Serrin 3.8 million km² Trade
Irkhen 2.4 million km² Industrial
Raal 3.1 million km² Mining
Khar-Tor 2.8 million km² Agrarian
Shan 1.9 million km² Energy
Vexar 2.2 million km² Technological
Serrin-Ur 1.4 million km² Cultural

Each region formed around its economic core in the recovery era (→ see [Volume II, Ch.04, "The Era of Crisis"]). The distribution of specializations ensured complementarity: no region was self-sufficient, making the union economically necessary.

5.2 Cultural Renaissance

−600 – −200 — a period of cultural flourishing known as the "Age of Enlightenment." In these four centuries were laid the philosophical, scientific, and literary foundations of all subsequent civilization.

5.2.1 Philosophy

The "School of the Three Paths" — a philosophical movement that formulated the foundations of Xha'Ruun ethics:

The Three Paths were not opposed but viewed as complementary: knowledge without action is barren, action without harmony is destructive, harmony without knowledge is blind. This triad later became the normative basis both for religion (the Teaching of Vibration) and for the political ethics of the Council of Unity.

5.2.2 Literature and Art

Work Author Year Significance
"First Principles" Vel-Khal −550 Foundation of science
"Book of the Cycle" Ven-Shar −420 Sacred text
"Harmony of the Spheres" Tor-Mor −380 Astronomy
"History of the Empires" Khal-Ven −320 Historiography

The era's literature combines the scientific treatise, the religious text, and historiography — genres that had previously existed separately. The "Book of the Cycle" fixed the cyclic cosmology that became the core of the Teaching of Vibration (→ see [Volume I, Ch.10, "Mythology and Religion"]).

5.3 Technological Breakthrough

The Renaissance is a period of technological acceleration that began in the recovery phase with the invention of the steam engine (−1,200, Thal-Ven, Shan-En) and culminated in the space era.

5.3.1 Chronology of Discoveries

Year Discovery Region Consequences
−1,200 Steam engine Shan-En Beginning of industrialization
−500 Magnetic compass Irkhen Seafaring
−400 Printing press Khar-Vexar Literacy
−240 Electricity Raal Industry
−200 Telegraph Serrin Communication
−100 Radio Irkhen Mass media
0 Unified calendar All Standardization
+480 Orbital flight Khar-Vexar Space

5.3.2 Electrification

−240 — mastery of electricity (EV-0008) and the creation of the first generator. By +200 electricity became the main carrier of industrial energy, displacing steam engines from most applications.

Electrification also had a social dimension: power stations required standardization and centralized management, strengthening the role of engineering guilds and preparing the ground for planetary infrastructure.

5.4 Unification of the Continents

5.4.1 Kharak — Rhuval

After the Unity Treaty, Kharak and Rhuval established permanent diplomatic and trade relations. By −200 Rhuval joined the treaty, extending the union to the second continent.

5.4.2 Vexar

Vexar, due to its geographic isolation, joined later — by +200, after regular sea communication through the Gharra ocean was established. From this moment the Unity Treaty covered all three continents, and the union became effectively planetary.

5.5 Preconditions of the Council of Unity

By +500 it became clear that the regional system of government could not cope with the growing complexity of the intercontinental economy.

5.5.1 Problems

5.5.2 The Solution

+800 — the beginning of negotiations on creating a central authority. +850 — the founding of the Council of Unity (Rass-Vokh-Sha) of 49 members (24 from guilds, 25 from regions), which became the supreme representative body of the civilization. With this event the next era begins (→ see [Volume II, Ch.06, "The Era of Unity"]).

Chapter Summary

  1. The Unity Treaty (−750) united 8 regions of Kharak on the principles of a federation of autonomies.
  2. The Age of Enlightenment (−600 – −200) — the flourishing of philosophy, science, and literature.
  3. The "School of the Three Paths" — the foundation of Xha'Ruun ethics (Knowledge, Harmony, Action).
  4. Technological breakthrough: from the steam engine (−1,200) to orbital flight (+480).
  5. Rhuval joined the Unity by −200, Vexar by +200.
  6. The founding of the Council of Unity (+850) ended the era and opened a new one.

Treaty relations and Council representation are different stages. Relations with Vexar by year 200 do not imply that the Council existed before its foundation in 850.
