Chapter 9: Xha'Ruun Technology
"We do not fly faster than light. We do not resurrect the dead. We do not read minds. But we have learned to ignite a star in a reactor, build bridges to the sky, and speak across the entire system. Is that enough? For now — yes." — Fusion engineer Thar-Vek-Sha, "Energy and Civilization," Era of Unity

Introduction
Xha’Ruun have mastered controlled fusion, built an orbital elevator and established settlements on nearby bodies in the Khar’Vex system. Most resources and production chains remain tied to their home planet. Space infrastructure has not removed that dependence.
A key feature of Xha'Ruun technological development is acceptance of fundamental limitations. Faster-than-light drives, time travel, full-fledged artificial intelligence — all are recognized as physically or ethically impossible. Xha'Ruun technologies develop not outward (violating the laws of physics), but inward (maximally efficiently using what is permitted).
9.1 Energy
9.1.1 Energy Balance Structure
TABLE 9.1: Thexar Energy Balance (4,028 E.U.)
Source Power in year 4028, GW Share (rounded) Nuclear: fission and fusion 1,420 ≈62% Orbital solar 420 ≈18% Hydropower 240 ≈10% Geothermal 120 ≈5% Tidal and wave 83 ≈4% Wind 25 ≈1% Total 2,308 100%
9.1.2 Thermonuclear Fusion
KEY FACT
Controlled thermonuclear fusion was first demonstrated in +1,420 y.c. — 570 years after the foundation of the Council of Unity. The delay is related to the slow recovery after the Era of Crisis.
Reactor types:
| Type | Fuel | T plasma | Status | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tokamak (Thar-Vek) | D + T (³H) | 81.6 million °X | Industrial (+1,420) | Stationary stations |
| Stellarator (Khel-Thar) | D + ³He | 108.7 million °X | Industrial (+2,100) | Compact reactors |
| Laser fusion (Khar-Thar) | D + D | 163.1 million °X | Experimental | Future prospect |

Fuel base:
- Deuterium: abundant (→ see [Ch.01, "Nucleosynthesis"]) — concentration 3.2×
- Tritium: bred in reactors from lithium-6 (lithium reserves on Thexar are significant)
- Helium-3: mined from the surface of the moon Thel, also synthesized in reactors
9.1.3 Solar Power
At Théxar’s orbit, irradiance is about 1.026 times the mean at Earth. Ground-level solar output also depends on cloud, atmosphere, latitude and operating conditions; Khar’Vex’s lower luminosity alone does not require larger panels.
9.2 Materials Science
9.2.1 Superheavy Elements
KEY FACT
Due to the elevated strong interaction constant (αₛ = 0.1197), superheavy elements with Z = 126–130 are stable in the Xha'Ruun universe. Xha'Ruun synthesize and use them on an industrial scale.
| Element | Z | A (stable) | Half-life | Properties | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kharinium (Kh) | 127 | 327 | 12,400 y | Ferromagnet, high T_c | Superconductors |
| Vexanium (Vx) | 128 | 330 | 8,200 y | High density (23.3 kh/dl³) | Ballast, shielding |
| Tharinium (Thr) | 129 | 333 | 3,500 y | Refractory (T_melt = 2,180.4 °X) | Fusion reactors |
| Nurinium (Nur) | 130 | 336 | 1,800 y | Catalytic activity | Chemical industry |
IMPORTANT
Kharnic components serve in the lift’s electrical systems, while carbon composites form its load-bearing tether. Superconductivity alone does not provide tensile strength. Tharium coatings are used in reactor installations.
9.2.2 Nanotubes and Graphene
Carbon nanotubes and graphene are produced on an industrial scale. Used for:
- Orbital elevator cable — carbon nanotubes + kharinium doping (tensile strength: 1,150.8 thou-atmo)
- Composite materials for aviation and space
- Electronics (graphene transistors)
9.2.3 Biomimetic Materials
Inspired by Thexar nature (→ see [Ch.04, "Biochemistry"]):
- Si-channel membranes — for water and gas filtration
- Selenium polymers — wear-resistant coatings
- Silicon-organic composites — lightweight and strong (analog of coral, but synthetic)
9.3 Transportation
9.3.1 Ground Transport
| Type | Speed | Energy | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maglev (intercity) | up to 122.0 mo/h | Electricity | Ubiquitous |
| Maglev (high-speed) | up to 243.9 mo/h | Superconductors | Main arteries |
| Electric personal | up to 36.6 mo/h | Electricity | Cities |
| Freight | up to 24.4 mo/h | Electricity | Network |
9.3.2 Aviation
Aviation uses electric motors and (on military/research craft) hydrogen turbines. Passenger transport is at altitudes of 1.6–2.8 mo, speed up to 182.9 mo/h. Supersonic aviation exists but is limited (noise restrictions).
9.3.3 Orbital Elevator
PROFILE: Khar-Tor Orbital Elevator
Parameter Value Location Thexar equator (0°, 142° E) Height ≈38,000 km above the surface Cable material Carbon nanotubes + Kh-alloy Cable strength 1,150.8 thou-atmo Load capacity 72.7 ru per trip Ascent speed 40.7 mo/h Travel time ~8 days (to GSO) Built +2,100 y.c. Status Active, 2 more under construction
The orbital elevator is an engineering feat of Xha'Ruun civilization. It connects the surface of Thexar to geostationary orbit (GSO), allowing cargo delivery to space with negligible energy costs compared to rocket launch.
Elevator construction:
| Component | Description |
|---|---|
| Anchor (surface) | Hexagonal platform 0.2 × 0.2 mo, at 2,926.8 sha above sea level (equatorial zone) |
| Cable | Bundle of carbon nanotubes doped with kharinium. Diameter: 14.0 pa at base, 0.6 pa at orbital end |
| Cabins | Electromagnetic lifts, 4 cabins (2 ascending, 2 descending simultaneously) |
| Counterweight | GSO station "GSO-1" (expanded, mass ~2,545.5 ru) |
| Energy | Solar panels on cable + laser energy transmission from the surface |
Elevator economics:
- Cargo delivery cost to orbit: ~200 VT/kg (vs. ~12,000 VT/kg by rocket)
- Payback period: achieved in 80 y
- Passenger traffic: ~5,000 persons/y (specialists, tourists)
- Cargo flow: ~1,454.5 ru/y (station materials, spacecraft)

New elevators (under construction):
- "Ven-Khal" — second elevator, location: 0°, 28° W (off the coast of Rhuval). Planned completion: +4,080 y.c.
- "Khar-Tor II" — third elevator, location: 0°, 108° E (Khal-Tor island). Planned completion: +4,150 y.c.
After all three elevators are operational, space cargo flow will reach 6,060.6 ru/y — enabling the construction of an orbital city.
9.4 Computing and Communications
9.4.1 Computing Technology
Xha'Ruun use hybrid computing systems:
| Type | Basis | Performance | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electronic | Silicon chips | Up to 10¹⁵ FLOPS | Standard computing |
| Bio-optical | Photons + biomolecules | Up to 10¹⁸ FLOPS | Scientific computing, AI |
| Quantum | Qubits (superconducting) | Up to 10³ qubits | Cryptography, simulations |
Artificial intelligence exists in forms:
- Expert systems — powerful, specialized (medicine, engineering)
- Neural networks — for data analysis, pattern recognition
- No self-awareness — philosophical and ethical prohibition on creating full AGI (→ see [Ch.08, "Ethics"])
9.4.2 Communications
| Type | Range | Speed | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiber optic | Planetary | 10 Tbit/s | Terrestrial networks |
| Radio (VHF) | Planetary | 1 Gbit/s | Mobile communication |
| Laser (space) | Interplanetary | 100 Mbit/s | Space missions |
| Quantum | Planetary | Secure channel | Banking, government |
9.5 Medicine and Biotechnology
9.5.1 Lifespan
The average lifespan of Xha'Ruun has increased from ~80 years (pre-industrial era) to 150–200 years (modernity) thanks to:
| Achievement | Period | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Antibiotics (analogs) | −400 | +15 years |
| Vaccination | −200 | +10 years |
| Genetic correction | +500 | +25 years |
| Regenerative medicine | +1,200 | +20 years |
| Selenium therapy (antioxidants) | +1,500 | +15 years |
9.5.2 Regenerative Medicine
Xha'Ruun possess the technology of stimulating limb regeneration — a lost limb (except vexes) can be regrown in 6–12 months. The technology is based on activation of embryonic stem cells and bio-implants from silicon-organic matrices.
9.5.3 Genetics
Genetic modification of somatic cells is legal and widely used for treating hereditary diseases. Modification of the germline (heritable changes) is prohibited by the ethical code of the Healers guild.
IMPORTANT
Xha'Ruun fundamentally do not engage in eugenics or species improvement through genetics. The Red Rot epidemic (−2,120 y.c.) left a deep mark on the collective memory: past attempts to "improve" the population through selection led to catastrophes. The modern position: "We are good enough as we are."
9.6 Space Technology

9.6.2 Interstellar Probe
PROFILE: "Nur-Vex" Probe (Birth-Gift)
Parameter Value Target Nearest star (5.2 ly) Engine type Photon sail + laser boost Maximum speed 0.08 c Flight time ~65 Julian years Launch +3,800 y.c. Mass 91 kh Science payload Spectrometer, camera, magnetometer
The "Nur-Vex" probe is the first artificial object of Xha'Ruun to leave the star system. Its mission is to fly past the nearest star (red dwarf M3.5V, no habitable planets) and transmit data.
Technical details of the probe:
| System | Characteristic |
|---|---|
| Engine | Photon sail (area: ~1,487 sha²) + laser boost from Thexar orbit |
| Hull | Silicon-organic composite, thickness 0.23 pa. Shielding: vexanium foil (0.01 pa) against cosmic dust |
| Power | RTG based on kharinium (half-life 12,400 y) + solar panels |
| Communications | Narrow-beam laser communication with precise pointing; signal delay grows with distance. |
| Signal delay | ~5.2 Julian years one way (at maximum distance) |
| Scientific instruments | Spectrometer (IR+UV), high-resolution camera, magnetometer, dust detector |
Probe mission:
- Flyby of the red dwarf — surface imaging, spectroscopy of planetary atmospheres
- Measurement of the interstellar medium and magnetic field beyond the heliosphere
- Data transmission — an estimated ~3 TB of scientific information over 10 y of active phase
- After the mission concludes — the probe will continue moving toward the next star (0.03 ly per 1,000 y)
KEY FACT
The "Nur-Vex" probe moves so fast (0.08 c) that it will reach the nearest star in ~65 Julian years (cruise only). But due to time dilation (special relativity), 0.2 y less will pass on the probe than on Thexar. For Xha'Ruun, this is the first experiment with relativistic effects at interstellar distances.
9.6.3 Space Infrastructure
| Object | Orbit | Status | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Station "Khar-Vex" | LEO (81.3 mo) | Active (+520) | Scientific, transfer hub |
| Station "GSO-1" | GSO (≈38,000 km above the surface) | Active (+2,150) | Trade, cargo |
| Station "Thalas" | Near-synchronous | Active (+1,800) | Ocean monitoring |
| Base "Xhel-Aero" | Upper layers of Xhel | Active (+2,200) | Research |
| Mine "Veksarr-1" | Asteroid | Active (+2,800) | Metal mining |
9.7 Planetary Defense
9.7.1 Detection System
Xha'Ruun maintain a network of telescopes and radars for detecting potentially hazardous asteroids and comets:
| Component | Coverage | Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|
| Ground telescopes (14) | Full sky | Objects >61.0 sha |
| Space telescope "Thar-Ven" | L2 point | Objects >12.2 sha |
| Orbital radar (equator) | Inner system | Objects >6.1 sha |
9.7.2 Deflection System
Upon detecting a hazardous object (collision probability >1%), the following methods are applied:
- Small objects (<122.0 sha): laser surface vaporization (ablation)
- Medium objects (122.0–609.8 sha): kinetic impactor (mass 6.1–12.1 ru)
- Large objects (>609.8 sha): thermonuclear charge (deflection)
KEY FACT
Over the last 3,000 y, the planetary defense system has intercepted 11 potentially hazardous objects (3 of which were >0.4 mo). Thermonuclear deflection technology was used once (+2,110 y.c.) against an asteroid 0.4 mo in diameter.
9.8 Military Technology
9.8.1 General Context
KEY FACT
Xha'Ruun have not waged major wars for 2,780 y (since the Unity Treaty, −750 y.c.). Armed forces exist exclusively for defense and maintaining order. Military technology is not a top priority.
| Component | Strength | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Strategic forces | ~50,000 | Planetary defense |
| Space fleet | ~30 ships | System patrol |
| Local guard | ~200,000 | Order keeping |
9.8.2 Limitations
- Biological weapons — prohibited by international law (Memory of the Red Rot)
- Weapons of mass destruction — limited (a few thermonuclear devices are kept)
- Space weapons — placement of weapons in orbit is prohibited (Unity Treaty)
9.9 Fundamental Technological Limitations
TABLE 9.9: What does NOT exist in Xha'Ruun technology
Technology Reason for Absence Comment Faster-than-light drives Physical impossibility Causality Full AI Ethical ban Philosophical position Cloning Ethical ban — Nanobots (replicators) Partial ban Due to "grey goo" risk Weapons of mass destruction Ethical + legal ban — Cryonics (human freezing) Ineffective Cell damage Time travel Physical impossibility —
9.10 Environmental Technology
9.10.1 Climate Management
Xha'Ruun do not manage the planet's climate on a global scale — this is recognized as too risky. However, local regulation is practiced:
- Desert irrigation (4% of Kharak's area)
- Reforestation (+12% forest cover over the last 500 y)
- Ocean protection from overfishing
9.10.2 Recovery After the Era of Crisis
The Era of Crisis (−2,100 – −750) was caused in part by ecological collapse (deforestation, erosion). Modern technologies allow Xha'Ruun to maintain ecological balance:
- Recycling: 94% of waste is processed
- Energy: nuclear and renewable sources reduce direct emissions, while manufacturing and extraction still have environmental costs.
- Mining: predominantly asteroid-based (for metals), not terrestrial
