Chapter 8: Culture and Society of Xha'Ruun
"We are not merely a society. We are a symphony. Each guild is its own voice, each region its own part, each triad its own measure. And the conductor — neither person nor god — is Unity, the harmony of all voices." — From "The Book of Unity," main philosophical treatise of the Era of Unity

Introduction
Xha'Ruun culture is a product of many millennia of social evolution, in which biology, family traditions and communication and historical experience (rise and fall of the Empire, epidemic, rebirth) are intertwined. This is a culture where collective knowledge is valued above individual ambitions, truth and its source above gain, and harmony above conflict.
Xha'Ruun society is one of the most stable in the known galaxy. The Council of Unity has existed for 3,178 years without interruption. Guilds are not merely professional associations but bearers of an ethical code. Triads are not merely families but cells of mutual aid.
8.1 Social Structure
8.1.1 General Overview
KEY FACT
Xha'Ruun society is a meritocracy with elements of guild corporatism. Social status is determined not by birth, but by merit, confirmed through education, professional achievements, and recommendations.

8.1.2 Castes vs Guilds
Formally, there is no caste system. De facto, society is stratified by profession:
| Level | Criteria | Approximate Share |
|---|---|---|
| First Voice | Chair of the Council | 1 |
| Keepers (Vek'ruun) | Council members, guild heads | ~0.01% |
| Masters (Sha'ruun) | Highest qualification, academic degrees | ~5% |
| Artisans (Thar'ruun) | Professional certification | ~45% |
| Students (Xa'ruun) | In training, entry level | ~20% |
| Apprentices (Mor'ruun) | Basic education, unskilled labor | ~30% |
Social mobility: high. Any Xha'Ruun can rise from Student to Master by passing a series of professional exams and obtaining recommendations from current masters. There are no "class barriers."
8.1.3 Guilds

Special status: the guild of Keepers (Ven-Thex) is considered the oldest and most honorable — its roots trace back to the First Library (−4,800 y.c.). Keepers are responsible for preserving all knowledge of civilization. A Keeper cannot be removed from the Council of Unity except by a ¾ vote of the Council.
8.2 System of Government
8.2.1 Council of Unity
The Council of Unity (Rass-Vokh-Sha) is the supreme legislative and executive body of 49 members. Founded in +850 y.c.
| Characteristic | Rule |
|---|---|
| Number of members | 49 (7 × 7 — sacred number) |
| Method of election | 24 members from 12 guilds, 25 from 8 domains |
| Term of office | 10 years |

8.2.3 Law and Courts
The judicial system is based on three principles:
- Truth (ven) — the decision must conform to established facts
- Justice (rass) — the decision must restore harmony
- Transparency (sha-ven) — court is open, arguments are recorded
| Court Level | Jurisdiction | Composition |
|---|---|---|
| District Court | Minor disputes, offenses | 1 judge |
| Provincial Court | Criminal cases, appeals | 3 judges |
| Supreme Court of Unity | Constitutional matters | 7 judges (lifetime) |

8.3 Ethics and Values
8.3.1 Three Pillars of Xha'Ruun Ethics
| Value | Concept | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge | Ven | Highest value. Knowledge is not power, it is responsibility. Sharing knowledge is a moral duty. Concealing knowledge is a crime. |
| Harmony | Rass | Balance between personal and public, tradition and progress, labor and rest. |
| Truth | Ven-Ash | Truthfulness as the foundation of trust. Lies destroy social bonds (cf. obligatory evidentiality in language, → see [Ch.06, "Evidentiality"]). |
8.3.2 Taboos and Prohibitions
| Action | Status | Punishment |
|---|---|---|
| Willful destruction of knowledge | Gravest | Exile from guilds |
| Deliberate lie with direct evidentiality | Grave | Up to 20 years correctional labor |
| Birth suppression (without medical indication) | Grave | Public censure |
| Killing a tribesperson | Gravest | Life imprisonment / execution |
| Harm to a child/larva | Gravest | Life sentence |
| Theft of knowledge (plagiarism) | Grave | Loss of guild status |
| Violation of guild oaths | Moderate | Expulsion from guild |
8.3.3 Attitude Toward Knowledge
Knowledge in Xha'Ruun culture is not merely power. It is a sacred duty to past and future generations.
KEY FACT
Xha'Ruun have a concept of "Debt of Knowledge" (ven-mor) — the moral obligation of every member of society to share their knowledge with the archives. Refusal to transmit knowledge (for example, a scientist taking a discovery to the grave) is considered nearly worse than murder. "To kill a body is to deprive one life. To kill knowledge is to deprive thousands of lives that could have used it."
8.4 Triad and Family
8.4.1 Triad
TERM: Triad
The basic family-economic unit of Xha'Ruun. Consists of 3–4 individuals: one male (♂), one female (♀), and one or two neuters (⚲). The triad is not necessarily based on biological kinship — it is a social contract sealed by the ceremony of "Merging of Voices" (sha-thar).
| Triad Member | Role | Reproductive Function |
|---|---|---|
| Male (♂) | Provision, external relations | Fertilization |
| Female (♀) | Management, hierarchy | Egg laying |
| Neuter(s) (⚲) | Upbringing, household | Sterile |
Triad formation is voluntary, usually at age 25–40, after a courtship period (1–3 years). The triad is registered with the guild of Scribes.
8.4.2 Family Life Cycle
| Stage | Duration | Event |
|---|---|---|
| Courtship | 1–3 years | Acquaintance, joint work |
| Triad formation | Ceremony | "Merging of Voices" |
| First clutch | 2–5 years after | 2–4 eggs |
| Rearing | 25+ years | Until offspring independence |
| Post-reproductive | 50+ years | Mentorship |
| Triad dissolution | Upon members' death | — |
8.4.3 Child Rearing
Xha'Ruun children (larvae) hatch from eggs after 180–200 days of incubation. The first 3 years of life is a larva-like stage requiring constant care (fed with a milk-like secretion produced by the skin of neuters). All three members of the triad participate in upbringing.
Education begins at age 3: language, social norms, basic skills. From age 12 — professional training in guilds.
8.5 Art and Literature
8.5.1 Aesthetic Principles
Xha'Ruun art is based on three aesthetic principles:
- Geometric order — symmetry, repeating patterns, fractal structures (reflecting the senary system and love of order)
- Resonance — art must "sound" (even visual art) — evoke an emotional response, synchronize with the viewer's pheromonal background
- Transparency — art should not hide the process of creation; the structure is visible, the layers are legible
8.5.2 Music
Music holds a special place in Xha'Ruun culture — it is directly connected to religion (→ see [Ch.10, "Religion"]) and architectural acoustics.
| Genre | Description | Typical Instrument |
|---|---|---|
| Sacred | Multi-frequency chorales for 2 pairs of vocal cords | Live voice (only) |
| Chamber | Instrumental ensembles (2–6) | Khar-long (string), Thar-drum |
| Symphonic | Orchestra (up to 60) | Full Xha'Ruun orchestra |
| Electronic | Frequency synthesizers | Quantrophone |
Unique instrument — quantrophone: produces sound from quantum current fluctuations in a superconductor. Its sound is believed to be the closest to the "voice of the universe" (the Primordial Vibration).
Music theory is based on the senary system:
- 6 notes in an octave
- Intervals: prime, fifth, fourth, third (6-step scale)
- Modes: 6 main (major-like, minor-like, "twilight," "dawn," "cosmic," "temple")
- Rhythms: based on the number 6 — time signatures 6/8, 6/4, 12/8
Historical periods of music:
| Period | Dates | Characteristic | Notable Composer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Archaic | −5,000 – −3,000 | Monophonic hymns, ritual drums | Anonymous |
| Classical | −3,000 – −2,100 | Development of choral music, first instrumental ensembles | Thar-Vex-Mor (~−2,800) |
| Post-crisis | −1,500 – −500 | Simplification, folk motifs, revival | Shan-Vek-Khar (~−1,200) |
| Romantic | −500 – +500 | Symphony orchestra, program music | Ruun-Sha-En (~−200) |
| Modern | +500 – present | Electronic, quantrophone, genre synthesis | Vex-Thar-Nur (+3,100) |
8.5.3 Literature
The Xha'Ruun literary tradition spans ~10,000 years. The key genre is the chronicle (historical narrative with obligatory evidentiality).
TABLE: Genres of Xha'Ruun Literature
Genre Characteristic Evidentiality Example Chronicles Historical records Obligatory "Chronicles of Eternity" (12 volumes) Treatises Scientific-philosophical High "Grammar of Being" (+1,200) Epic Heroic tales Partial "Song of the Seven Voices" Poetry Strict metrical forms Optional "Cycle of Times" (Sha-En-Vex) Drama Theater with music Low "Fall of the Empire" Prose Novels, stories Variable "Journey to Xhel"
Great works:
- "Chronicles of Eternity" (Mor-Vokh-Sha) — 12-volume historical work covering history from −12,000 to +2,000 y.c. Compiled over 800 years by several generations of Keepers.
- "Grammar of Being" (Sha-Ven-Thex) — philosophical treatise by Master Shaen-Nur, describing the connection between language, thought, and reality.
- "Song of the Seven Voices" (Khar-Vokh-Shan) — epic poem in 108 cantos, each dedicated to one aspect of cosmogony.
- "Cycle of Times" (Mor-Shan) — poetry cycle by poet Sha-En-Vex, exploring the nature of time and memory.
Xha'Ruun poetic form is built on syllabic meter (not tonic). The basic meter is hexameter (6 syllables per line, with caesura after the 3rd syllable):
Two parts of a poetic line
| Fragment | Meaning |
|---|---|
| khar-ven | light-truth |
| the-xa-mor | earth-life-time |
khar-ven / the-xa-mor
"light-truth / earth-life-time"
More complex forms use 6 × n syllables with rhyme on the 1st and 4th stressed syllable of the line.
8.5.4 Architecture
Xha'Ruun architecture is characterized by:
- Hexagonal forms (hexagons, hexahedra) — from city plans to ornaments
- Acoustic design — buildings are designed with sound resonance in mind
- Horizontality — due to low population density, cities grow outward rather than upward (skyscrapers are rare)
- Environmental integration — buildings do not dominate the landscape but blend into it
Resonance temple: top view
- Plan form
Hexagonal.
- Acoustic foci
Located at the corners.
- Interior elements
A rectangular area occupies the upper part; below it, two groups of elements converge toward the middle.
The building is designed for acoustic resonance.
