Introduction
The demographic history of the Xha'Ruun is the story of how a small founder population became a civilization of billions, survived a catastrophic decline, and developed conscious control over growth. Each era left its demographic profile, and the dynamics of numbers directly reflect the state of society — from the Empire's flourishing to crisis and stabilization.
16.1 Population Growth
Below is the population of the Xha'ri (the main land species) by era:
| Period | Population | Growth rate | Event |
|---|---|---|---|
| −15,000 | 8,000 | — | Early recorded Xha’ri settlements |
| −9,800 | 200,000 | — | Writing |
| −6,200 | 2.5 million | — | First Empire |
| −2,150 | 18 million | — | Empire peak (Kharak) |
| −750 | 4 million | — | After the crisis (Kharak) |
| +850 | 400 million | — | Council of Unity |
| +4,028 | 2.8 billion | 0.30% | The present |
The table combines different scopes: early settlements, Kharak during the crisis and later planetary estimates. Its rows are not a single census with unchanged coverage. The modern 0.3% ceiling is a policy, not the calculated average growth between all listed dates.
Key patterns:
- First Empire peak (−2,150): ~18 million (Kharak's population) — the limit at which the agricultural resources of the Central Plain were exhausted;
- Crisis (−750): decline to ~4 million — a demographic collapse following the ecological one;
- Recovery and the Era of Unity: growth accelerates with each technological transition (industrialization −1,200, fusion +1,420, post-scarcity +2,800).
16.2 Distribution by Species
| Species | Population | Share | Trend |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xha'ri | ≈ 2.8 billion | ~58% | Stable |
| Kel'vash | ≈ 1.2 billion | ~25% | Growing |
| Moryn | ≈ 0.8 billion | ~17% | Stable |
| Total | ≈ 4.8 billion | 100% | — |
The Xha'ri remain the majority, but their share is gradually declining due to the higher growth rate of the Kel'vash. Demographic policy considers all three species: the Growth Commandment applies to total population, and the Council monitors the balance (→ see [Volume II, Ch.14, "The Three Species"]).
16.3 The Growth Commandment
The modern demographic regime is regulated by the Growth Commandment: population growth must not exceed 0.3% per year. The mechanism of compliance is cultural norm and economic planning, not coercion:
- Family policy encourages stability rather than maximizing births;
- Education and medicine make family planning accessible;
- The post-scarcity economy removes economic incentives for large families.
The Growth Commandment is a direct response to the ecological crisis of the First Empire (→ see [Volume II, Ch.04, "The Era of Crisis"]): the civilization consciously limits numbers so as not to repeat the mistake of exhausting the resource base.
Chapter Summary
- Demographic history: from 8,000 founders to 2.8 billion Xha'ri.
- Empire peak ~18 million (Kharak), crisis — decline to ~4 million.
- Growth accelerates with technological transitions; the modern policy ceiling is 0.3%/year.
- All species: ≈ 4.8 billion (Xha'ri 58%, Kel'vash 25%, Moryn 17%).
- The Growth Commandment — conscious limitation of numbers as a lesson of the ecological crisis.
