Volume VI: Technology — Chapter 1: Technology of Xha'Ruun
"You think technology is machines. No. Technology is the way of changing reality in accordance with will. We do not build machines. We grow possibilities." — Keeper of Knowledge, lecture on the nature of technology, +3,800 Y.E.

1.1 Fundamental Difference
Xha’Ruun technology combines grown living materials with mechanics, optics and power engineering. Its distinctive character is especially evident in three fields:
Symbiogenesis grows organisms and symbiotic colonies for particular tasks. Living building layers repair damage and ship membranes collect light; frames, fastenings and protective shells join grown and manufactured components.
Resonance engineering uses coupled oscillations, directed energy transfer and field control. Tuning reduces losses but requires power; load and heating limit the devices.
The material nature of information. Recording changes a carrier’s state. Crystals, living cells and optical circuits store information differently, but all need matter, energy and protection from damage. Erasing a record does not annihilate its material carrier.
1.2 Kardashev Scale: 0.64 — but that says nothing
The Kardashev Scale (Type 0 → I → II → III) measures energy consumption. Xha'Ruun consume ~2,300 GW — which corresponds to ~0.64 of Type I.
An energy scale does not describe how machines work or the labour needed to maintain them. High efficiency makes energy go further; it does not remove the need for it.
