Introduction

The lexical system of Xha'Ruun is built on a compact root base: ~500 basic roots generate tens of thousands of derived words. The root is monosyllabic (CVC or CV); word formation is agglutinative, through suffixes with transparent semantics.

8.1 Root System

The Xha'Ruun language is based on ~500 roots. Each root is monosyllabic (CVC or CV).

Root Meaning Derivatives
xha- thought, mind xha'ruun (people), xha'ven (truth)
khar- light, star khar'vex (luminary), kharan (light)
the- soil thexar (planet), theri (soil)
sha- language, word sharuu (writing system), shaven (dialect)
ruun- people ruuna (community), ruunen (society)

The roots are registered (L-000001–L-000500) and serve as the basis of lexicography. The polysemy of roots is a source of word-formation productivity.

8.2 Word Formation

Method Suffix Example
Noun -∅ khal (life)
Adjective -an kharan (light)
Verb -en khalen (to live)
Abstraction -ven khalven (vitality)
Agent -sha khalsha (living one)
Place -the khalthe (habitat)

The same sound sequence can belong to different morphemes. Derivational elements are distinguished from tense, case and source endings by function and position. For example, -en in the derivational table does not make every word ending in-en a complete present-tense predicate.

8.3 Compound Words

Composition is the second source of vocabulary growth:

The apostrophe marks the boundary of the components of a compound word.

8.4 Semantic Fields

Roots are grouped into semantic fields:

The fields reflect the cultural priorities of the civilization (→ see [Volume I, Ch.06]).

8.5 Borrowings

The vocabulary includes limited borrowings from the languages of other species:

Borrowings are phonologically adapted (→ see [Volume IV, Ch.02, "Phonology"]).

Chapter Summary

  1. ~500 roots (CVC/CV) generate 50 000+ words.
  2. Word formation is agglutinative; suffix meanings depend on function and position.
  3. Composition is the second source of vocabulary.
  4. Semantic fields reflect cultural priorities.
  5. Limited borrowings from the languages of Kel'vash and Moryn.
