Introduction

Science is the institutional foundation of Xha'Ruun civilization. Its organization is governed by two principles: openness (knowledge belongs to all) and guild coordination (research is managed by the Scholars Guild). The organization of science spans institutes, universities, observatories, and laboratories.

10.1 Structure

Element Count Function
Institutes 240 Research
Universities 48 Education
Observatories 36 Astronomy
Laboratories 8,200 Applied science

The network of institutes and laboratories is distributed across all domains (→ see [Volume III, Ch.05, "The 8 Domains"]), ensuring a diversity of scientific schools. The astronomical network includes orbital observatories and stations on the moons.

10.2 Budget

Spending 7.2% of GDP shows the high domestic priority assigned to research. Long programmes shelter fundamental work from some market fluctuations, but budgets, equipment and working time remain matters of choice and dispute.

10.3 Guild Coordination

Science is organized through the Scholars Guild (→ see [Volume III, Ch.04, "The 12 Guilds: Structure"]):

The role of the Keeper Guild — archiving results and preserving source records and checking data provenance.

10.4 Interspecies Science

All three species participate in science (→ see [Volume II, Ch.14, "The Three Species"]): Kel'vash — engineering and geological directions, Moryn — oceanography and deep-sea biology. Interspecies coordination is governed by the Law of Accord.

10.5 Ethical Limits

Scientific activity is limited by an ethical code:

These limits are not a prohibition of knowledge but an institutional framework (→ see [Volume II, Ch.10, "History of Science"]).

Chapter Summary

  1. Structure: 240 institutes, 48 universities, 36 observatories, 8,200 laboratories.
  2. R&D — 7.2% of GDP; 8.4 million scientists.
  3. The Scholars Guild coordinates programs; the Keepers — archives.
  4. Science is open and includes all three species.
  5. Ethical limits — a framework, not a prohibition of knowledge.
