Chapter 19: Natural Resources of Théxar

"The earth gave us everything. Metal — to build. Stone — to remember. Thorium — to shine. Water — to live. Everything we have, we took from her. Our duty is to return no less than we took." — From the "Code of the Guardians," +1,200 Y.E.

Théxar’s mineral resources reflect its starting composition, internal differentiation, magmatism and the long redistribution of elements in the crust. Deposits are unevenly distributed, shaping regional specialisation and trade.

Introduction

The natural resources of Théxar are one of the most important competitive advantages of Xha'Ruun civilization. The elevated metallicity of the protoplanetary cloud and the planet's longer geological history led to the formation of a unique mineral base without analogs in known planetary systems.

The location of deposits shaped the economy and political history. Thorium ores supported nuclear power; metals supported construction and industry. Access, transport and extraction conditions nevertheless remained subjects of dispute. Marine biological resources became important to pharmacology and biotechnology.

However, Théxar's resources are distributed unevenly, and this inequality — both between continents and between geological epochs — became an important factor in economic geography and politics.

19.1 Mineral Resources

KEY FACT

Théxar possesses exceptional wealth in key metals: iron enrichment factor — 2.8, thorium — 2.5, platinum — 2.2, REE — 1.8. The reason is the elevated metallicity of the protoplanetary cloud ([Fe/H] = +0.12) and a longer geological history.

19.1.1 Total Reserves

Resource Reserves (Théxar) Availability (cycles)

KEY FACT

Thorium (²³²Th) — the strategic resource of Théxar. Its reserves (10.9 million ру) with an enrichment factor of 2.5 provide the civilization's energy for >50,000 cycles. Kharak, as the continent with 52% of reserves, occupies a dominant position in global energy.

19.1.3 Deep-sea Resources

Théxar's oceans contain significant mineral deposits:

Resource Ocean Thalas Ocean Gharra Total
REE (from brines) 7.3 million ру 4.8 million ру 12.1 million ру

Deep-sea resource extraction is a high-tech sector, developed ~1,200 cycles ago. Automated stations at depths up to 7,317 ша collect nodules without human presence.

19.2 Energy Resources

19.2.1 Energy Balance Structure

TABLE 19.2: Energy Balance of the Xha'Ruun Union (4,028 Y.E.)

Source Capacity (GW) Share Growth in 10 cycles
Nuclear (Th fission + He-3 fusion) 1,420 62% +8%
Orbital solar stations 420 18% +15%
Hydroenergy 240 10% +2%
Geothermal 120 5% +5%
Tidal + wave 83 4% +12%
Wind 25 1% +3%
Total 2,308 100% +7%

19.2.2 Fusion

Nuclear energy is the foundation of Xha'Ruun civilization. Two main cycles:

Thorium cycle (Th → U-233):

He-3 cycle:

19.2.3 Orbital Solar Energy

Orbital solar stations (OSS) are the second most important energy source. Located in geostationary orbit (≈38 000 км над поверхностью), they transmit energy to the surface via microwave radiation.

Parameter Value
Number of stations 48 (active)
Power (average) 8.75 GW/station
Transfer efficiency 78%
Area of one station 0.5 мо²
Capacity factor0.92; eclipses and maintenance interruptions are included in station operation

19.2.4 Geothermal and Hydroenergy

Geothermal stations are located in tectonically active zones — the Khar-Tor range (Kharak) and the Irkhen chain (Rhuval). Total capacity — 120 GW.

Hydroenergy is fully developed: all major rivers have cascades of hydroelectric plants. Total capacity — 240 GW. The largest HEP is Thar-1 on the Thar River (capacity 22 GW).

19.3 Biological Resources

19.3.1 Forestry

Théxar's forests are the most important renewable resource. Annual sustainable timber harvest:

Region Volume (million ша³/cycle) Main Species
Kharak (taiga) 326.5 Needle-Bark, Khar-Pine
Vexar (temperate) 217.7 Ven-Shar, Mor-Ven
Kharak (savannas) 72.6 Khar-Grain (stalks)
Rhuval (tropical) 108.8 Tor-Khar (selective)
Total 725.6 —

Sustainable forestry is regulated by the Law of Silence: no more than 0.5% of forest fund is cut annually, and for each harvested hectare, 3 new ones are planted.

19.3.2 Fishing and Mariculture

Théxar's oceans are the primary source of animal protein.

Fishery Volume (million ру/cycle) Region
