Introduction

Xha'Ruun (full form: Xha'Ruun-Vokh — "thinking people of great harmony") are one of the sapient peoples of Thexar. They are hexapodal (six-limbed) egg-laying vertebrates with trinocular vision, tetrachromatic color perception, quadraaural hearing, and a triple gender system — one of the most complex reproductive strategies among known life forms.

Xha'Ruun are a product of 4 billion cycles of evolution in unique conditions: under an orange sky, at lower gravity, with sulfur-rich biochemistry and elevated background radiation. Every feature of their anatomy and physiology is a response to the challenges of the Thexar environment.

5.1 Evolutionary Origin

5.1.1 Genealogy

Xha'Ruun belong to the class Thermochromadae ("heat-colors") — an endemic vertebrate class of Thexar, characterized by:

TERM: Thermochromadae

The class of animals to which Xha'Ruun belong. The name derives from the roots thermo (heat) and chroma (color), reflecting the class members' ability to regulate body temperature through changes in skin pigmentation that absorb radiation. The class includes ~24,000 species on Thexar — from small reptile-like forms (0.24 sha) to large herbivores.

The upper pair of limbs, the vexes, bears membranes and participates in manipulation, balance and gesture. Adult Xha’Ruun use them for the following activities:

  • Balance support during running
  • Balancing and adjusting posture during movement
  • Gesticulation (additional communication channel)
  • Fine work (requiring 3 fingers)
  • Social rituals (embraces, greetings)

5.2.3 Axial Skeleton

The Xha'Ruun spine consists of 42–46 vertebrae. It is divided into:

5.3 Internal Organs and Systems

5.3.1 Circulatory System

Xha'Ruun have a closed two-circuit circulatory system with two hearts:

Heart Location Function Resting Rhythm
Thoracic heart (ven-thor) Upper sternum Pumps blood to head and upper limbs 35–50 bpm
Abdominal heart (ven-abd) Center of abdominal cavity Pumps blood to lower body and internal organs 28–42 bpm

The hearts work in alternating phase: when the thoracic heart contracts, the abdominal one relaxes, and vice versa. This creates a constant, pulsating blood flow without "dead phases."

Xha'Ruun blood is blue-green in color due to hemocyanin (a copper-containing pigment, analogous to hemoglobin), which is characteristic of many species of the class Thermochromadae.

Parameter Xha'Ruun
Number of hearts 2
Blood pigment Hemocyanin (Cu)
Blood color Blue-green
Number of lungs 4
Blood pressure (sys.) 170/100
Blood volume ~12 L

5.3.2 Respiratory System

The four lungs of Xha'Ruun are arranged in pairs:

Total lung capacity: ~14 L. Resting respiratory rate: 8–12 breaths/min.

Supplementary breathing: Xha'Ruun skin contains a capillary network capable of absorbing up to 8% of oxygen (important during extended submersion).

5.3.3 Digestive System

Xha'Ruun are omnivorous, with a bias toward a protein-plant diet. The digestive system is adapted to the high sulfur content in food (→ see [Ch.04, "Biochemistry"]):

Organ Function Feature
Oral cavity Grinding 3 rows of teeth: cutting, crushing, grinding
Esophagus Transport Length ~1.5 sha
Stomach (1st) Acid digestion pH 1.5–2.0
Stomach (2nd) Alkaline digestion pH 8.0–8.5
Midgut Absorption Length ~7.3 sha
Cecum Sulfur processing Enlarged
Hindgut Water exchange —

5.3.4 Nervous System

The central nervous system of Xha'Ruun consists of:

Component Mass Neurons Function
Brain (3 lobes) ~0.97 kh ~1.8 × 10¹¹ Thinking, sensory processing
— Frontal lobe ~0.42 kh — Abstract thinking, planning
— Middle lobe ~0.30 kh — Sensory integration, memory
— Posterior lobe ~0.24 kh — Motor coordination, instincts
Spinal cord ~0.18 kh — Reflexes
Abdominal ganglion (2nd brain) ~0.12 kh ~1.0 × 10¹⁰ Autonomic functions, "intuition"

KEY FACT

Xha'Ruun possess a second nerve cluster — the abdominal ganglion, often called the "second brain" or "intuitive brain." It manages autonomic functions (digestion, breathing, heartbeat) and, according to Xha'Ruun neuroscientists, participates in processing emotions and intuitive decisions. The expression "deciding with the belly" (thar-ven) is not a metaphor but a physiological reality.

5.4 Sense Organs

Sense In Xha'Ruun Feature
Vision Tetrachromat (RGB+UV) UV channel
Hearing 8 Hz – 42 kHz Infrasound + ultrasound
Smell ~1,500 receptors High sensitivity
Taste 6 types +metal ions
Touch ~350/cm² Vibrations down to 1 µm
Additional Electroreception Weak electric fields
Additional Thermoreception Infrared range

5.4.1 Vision

Xha'Ruun are tetrachromats with four types of cones in the retina:

Cone Type Sensitivity Peak Color Range
S (short) 380 nm Ultraviolet 320–450 nm
M1 (medium 1) 490 nm Blue 450–540 nm
M2 (medium 2) 580 nm Orange (peak) 530–650 nm
L (long) 680 nm Red 620–780 nm

Vision features:

5.4.2 Hearing

The four ears of Xha'Ruun provide quadraaural perception — the ability to determine sound direction with ±0.5° accuracy:

Ear Pair Location Directionality Range
Front On sides of head, forward Frontal 20 Hz – 42 kHz
Rear On sides of skull, rearward Rear 8 Hz – 20 kHz

Infrasound sensitivity (8–20 Hz) — an evolutionary inheritance: can reveal low-frequency vibrations from seismic or volcanic activity and nearby animals. In modern civilization it is used in musical instruments and architectural acoustics (→ see [Ch.10, "Resonance Temples"]).

5.4.3 Smell

The Xha'Ruun olfactory system is one of the most developed among sapient species. ~1,500 receptor types allow:

Category Recognizable Scents Example
Biological Pheromones (8 main types) Fear, aggression, sexual readiness
Food-related Freshness, toxicity, ripeness —
Environmental Approaching storms, air humidity —
Social Individual body odor Identification with 90% accuracy

Pheromone communication is an important aspect of social life (→ see [Ch.08, "Culture"]).

5.4.4 Electroreception

Specialized cells (Khara ampullae) in the skin of the Xha'Ruun head allow sensing weak electric fields with intensity from 0.1 µV/cm.

Application Sensitivity Range
Detection of living beings Heartbeat up to 18 sha
Navigation in murky water Geomagnetic anomalies up to 122 sha
Weather assessment Air electrification (storms) up to 6 mo

In modern Xha'Ruun, electroreception is a rudimentary organ, significantly less acute than in the ancestral state. It is mainly used for sensing weather.

5.4.5 Thermoreception

Infrared sensors located on the upper pair of limbs (vexes) allow sensing thermal radiation in the range of 45–100°X with ±0.3°X accuracy. Evolutionarily, this was a hunting tool for tracking warm-blooded prey.

In modern society it is used for:

5.5 Reproductive System and Reproduction

5.5.1 Three Genders

KEY FACT

Xha'Ruun are one of the few known sapient species with a triple-gender reproductive system. Three genders — male (♂), female (♀), and neuter (⚲) — perform different biological and social functions, with distinct reproductive biology and varied family roles.

Gender Biological role Gametes Population Share Reproductive Role
Male (♂) Gamete-producing Sperm ~15% Fertilization
Female (♀) Gamete-producing Eggs ~20% Egg production
Neuter (⚲) Non-gamete-producing None ~65% Social — sterile

Biological rationale for three genders:

5.5.2 Reproductive Cycle

Stage Duration Description
Courtship 1–3 years Formation of a triad (♂+♀+⚲)
Mating 1 time Male fertilizes female
Egg formation 60–70 days Inside the female's body
Laying 1–2 days 2–4 eggs
Incubation (external) 180–200 days At t = 60…63°X
Hatching — Larva-like stage
Rearing 2–3 years All 3 parents participate
Sexual maturity ~25–30 years —

TERM: Triad

The basic reproductive unit of Xha'Ruun is the triad (one male + one female + one or two neuters). The triad forms a family, jointly raises offspring, and runs a household. Neuter partners may share care, household work and other activities according to the family’s arrangements. Social bonds in the triad are not biological but emotional and social.

5.5.3 Growth and Development

Young adult 25–50 Career start, triad formation
Mature 50–120 Peak productivity, reproduction
Elderly 120–150 Decline of reproductive function
Senescent 150–200 Wisdom, mentorship

5.5.4 Lifespan

The average lifespan of Xha'Ruun is 150–200 years. Recorded maximum: 247 years (Ven-Thal, Keeper of the First Library, +2,890 – +3,137 E.U.).

Factors of longevity:

  1. Efficient DNA repair mechanisms (→ see [Ch.04, "Radiation Resistance"])
  2. Slow metabolism (two-heart system)
  3. Diet rich in antioxidants (selenium compounds)
  4. Low stress levels (social support of the triad + lack of competition for food)

5.6 Skin Color and Pigmentation

5.6.1 Biology of Color

Xha'Ruun skin color is determined by:

  1. Chromatophores (pigment cells) — 4 types
  2. Silicon structures (interference layers)
  3. Heliotherm cells (heat absorption)
Pigment Type Color Function
Melanin-D From golden to dark bronze UV protection, thermoregulation
Silicolipene Iridescent (structural) Social signaling
Selenochrome Reddish-orange Antioxidant, nutritional status
Chromophore vacuole Changeable Mood (biochemistry)

5.6.2 Geographic Variations

Skin color varies by region (climate, insolation, selenium availability in soil):

Region Dominant Color Reason
Equatorial jungles (Kharak) Dark bronze High insolation
Temperate zone (Kharak/Rhuval) Golden-bronze Adaptive
Southern latitudes (Rhuval/Vexar) Copper-red Diet (selenium)
Northern latitudes (Kharak) Light golden Low insolation

5.7 Thermoregulation

Xha'Ruun are endothermic (warm-blooded) organisms with elements of heliothermy (heat absorption through the skin).

Parameter Value
Body temperature (resting) 65.3°X
Perspiration Low
Shivering Absent
Solar heating Yes (up to +1.1°X)
Activity peak Morning + evening

Heliotherm skin cells contain silicon-carbon channels (→ see [Ch.04, "Si-channels"]) that absorb infrared radiation and convert it into heat. After 20–30 minutes in the sun, a Xha'Ruun can raise its body temperature by 0.5–1.1°X, saving energy on metabolic thermogenesis.

5.8 Psychology and Intelligence

5.8.1 Cognitive Features

Aspect Characteristic
Type of intelligence Analytical + holistic
Memory Episodic + collective
Learning Social + experimental
Creativity Group + individual
Emotions 8 basic (6 standard + 2 unique)

Unique Xha'Ruun emotions:

Emotion Name Meaning
Thar-veks (strength-creation) Energy of collective creativity Arises during successful collaborative work
Zhal-ur (frost-peace) "Greenish melancholy" — calm acceptance of the inevitable Stoic sadness

5.8.2 Social Intelligence

Xha'Ruun are a highly social species. Isolation is psychologically destructive for them. Main manifestations of social intelligence:

5.8.3 Emotional Range

Xha'Ruun emotions can be amplified by pheromones (their own and others'). In an enclosed space without ventilation, a group of Xha'Ruun can enter emotional resonance — a state where emotions synchronize through the pheromonal channel, leading to group euphoria or panic.

5.9 Subspecies and Biological Variations

Genetically, all Xha'Ruun belong to the same species. However, over 12,000 years of civilization, regional biological differences have formed:

Group Region Height Skin Color Feature
